sight – energy – vague – ocean: work commentary in English

sight – energy – vague – ocean is one of my works that was composed within a short period of time. When I began composing the work, I barely had nothing else than just few thoughts and sketches for the overall form of the work. This is why the working process was in a state of constant change. However, the state of constant change and renewal is familiar to me as a composing environment anyway, as I am not drawn at all to the extremely rigorous and analytical way of working, no matter how much time I have at hand.

As far as the overall form is concerned, I strive to follow the convoluted guideline of the images and visions brought into my mind by the title of the work. The title of the work was already ready when I started composing, which is quite unusual for my own works. Despite the ready title and the imagery it evokes, the work is by no means programmatic in the traditional sense, and thus does not tell any particular story. Nonetheless, narrative character is very important to me in the music and I hope that my music will ultimately tell more of itself through music than my attempt to describe it in words.

sight – energy – vague – ocean: teoskommentti suomeksi

Kokonaismuodon osalta pyrin noudattamaan teoksen nimen synnyttämien mielikuvien kiemurtelevaa ohjenuoraa.

Flow: concert review in English

The concert was concluded with Flow by Markku Klami, who won the first prize in the national composition competition of the Finnish Polytechnic Chamber Orchestra last year. You wouldn't believe it to be his first orchestral work!

Klami clearly has a lot to say, and best of all, the ability to organize what he says in a natural way. Flow had edge, rhythmic and dramaturgical drive as well as multi-dimensional textures. The major second motif and tremolos introduced at the beginning laid a solid foundation for the music, and from these starting points grew an entity that progressed as its name suggests, flowing from one situation to another. There was no boring moment and the changes were skillfully made. The harmony was sharp enough, while the triads were not forgotten either.

If there would be something to develop further in the work, I think the rhythm could be further differentiated and enriched even more. When the motifs presented at the beginning returned in the last few minutes, it was an ending to a convincing journey.

Flow: konserttiarvostelu suomeksi
